The Australian pet market is shifting faster than most retail categories. Pet spending sits at A$21.3 billion a year. Cat ownership has grown from 27% of Australian households in 2019 to 34% today. Apartment and small-home living continues to climb, particularly in the major capitals. And the pet owner buying for that home is willing to pay more for products that match the rest of the household.
One of the categories benefiting most from those shifts is automated cat care. Litter robots. Smart feeders. UV-sterilisation water fountains. App-connected monitoring.
For Australian retailers thinking about where to put inventory in 2026 and beyond, automated cat care is one of the more defensible category bets available. Here's why.
01 · The structural shift is real.
Australian cat ownership has grown by seven percentage points of household share in five years. That growth is heavily concentrated in apartments and smaller dwellings. The apartment cat owner is structurally different from the suburban dog owner. They're time-poor. They live in smaller spaces. They're often dual-income. And they're willing to pay for products that reduce the friction of pet ownership in a small home.
That consumer is the engine of automated cat care demand. They're a big part of why the category has scaled in Australia.
02 · The margin profile is different.
Commodity pet products live on thin margin. Pet food, basic accessories, and consumables are necessary for traffic but they don't move the bottom line much. Automated cat care is different. A retailer stocking a $1,500 product sells fewer units, but the margin contribution per square metre is materially higher than a comparable shelf full of commodity accessories.
The retailers we see winning in this category aren't chasing volume. They're building category depth at the better end. The result is a higher-value transaction, a more loyal customer, and a category that earns its shelf space.
03 · The customer is often ready before the retailer is.
This is a pattern we see often. The Australian customer is researching automated cat care on YouTube, in international media, and through brand-direct channels. They arrive at the store ready to buy. Then they discover the store doesn't stock the category, or stocks one entry-level product, or has staff who can't answer questions about it.
The result is a missed sale. Worse, the customer often doesn't come back, because the next store they search has the category and the answer.
The category isn't waiting for retail to catch up. The retailers that catch up first capture a customer who's already convinced.
04 · Three sub-categories worth understanding.
If you're starting to think about automated cat care, the category divides into three meaningful sub-categories.
Automated litter and waste management. Litter robots and self-cleaning litter boxes. The anchor product is Whisker's Litter-Robot™, which leads the international category and which UPP has distributed in Australia for over ten years. High average transaction value. Strong repeat purchase on consumables and accessories.
Smart feeding and hydration. App-controlled feeders, scheduled dispensing, UV-sterilisation water fountains. Lower individual transaction value than the litter category, but higher repeat-purchase rate. Volume product.
Connected monitoring. Cameras, trackers, smart accessories. The youngest sub-category in commercial terms. Growing, but some products are still finding the right Australian price point.
A retailer building a serious automated cat care range should be active in at least two of the three.
05 · What good category execution looks like.
The retailers we see executing well on this category do four things consistently.
They go deep in one or two sub-categories rather than thin across all three. They train staff specifically on the products, because customers ask questions and walk if the answers aren't there. They use the products in-store, with a working unit on the floor where possible. And they treat the category as ongoing range management, not a one-off product addition.
Most of all, they choose a distribution partner who understands the category specifically, rather than treating it as a sub-section of a broader pet range.
The next move.
Automated cat care is a category that rewards depth, expertise, and commitment. The retailers leaning in now are building a solid category position early.
